The number of patients diagnosed with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has reached 85 in Vietnam after nine cases were confirmed late Thursday, with all of the new patients having been identified either at the airport or in quarantine.

Among the nine new cases, five were confirmed in Ho Chi Minh City and four were in Hanoi.

One is a U.S. citizen while the others are Vietnamese.

The 78th patient is a 22-year-old man who also studies in the UK. He landed at Noi Bai on March 17 on flight EK394.

The 79th patient, a 48-year-old woman who has lived in the UK for two years, traveled from London to Dubai on March 14 and then to Ho Chi Minh City on March 15.

Her 18-year-old son, who had lived with her in the UK and shared the same travel itinerary, is Vietnam’s 80th COVID-19 patient.

Patient No. 81, a 20-year-old man, returned to Ho Chi Minh City from France on flight AF258 on March 15.

The 84th and 85th patients, aged 21 and 20, are both Vietnamese students in the UK. They touched down in Hanoi on March 18 on flight VN0054.

The patients in Hanoi are currently being treated at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, while those in Ho Chi Minh City are receiving treatment at a field hospital in Cu Chi District.

The novel coronavirus, which first emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019, has infected over 244,800 people and killed more than 10,000 globally as of Friday morning, according to Ministry of Health statistics.

Vietnam’s COVID-19 tally has soared to 85, with 17 having fully recovered and been discharged from the hospital. No death has been reported in the country so far.

Hanoi has confirmed 23 cases while Ho Chi Minh City has reported 17 cases, including three having walked out of the hospital free of the virus.
