An open source-based virtual conference platform built by Vietnamese developers was officially launched on Friday.

The launch ceremony for the videoconferencing solution was organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications in Hanoi.

CoMeet, developed from an open-source platform, is the fruit of joint efforts from the CoMeet Alliance comprising six members — CMC TS, NetNam, iWay, Cyradar, FDS, and DQN.

Some of the key features CoMeet offers are hosting a virtual conference with unlimited participants, screen sharing for every attendee, private messages via an integrated chat tool, and session recording, among others.

On top of that, CoMeet offers protection for its users with data encryption and control over the number of participating members.

The tool is available for download for computers running Windows and macOS operating systems as well as on iOS and Android mobile devices via the App Store and Google Play, respectively.

By relying entirely on the domestic bandwidth, CoMeet is not susceptible to international Internet speed disruptions caused by submarine cable problems, which are frequent in Vietnam.

Two major submarine Internet cable systems connected to Vietnam, the Asia America Gateway (AAG) and Asia Pacific Gateway (APG), are currently broken down, significantly slowing Internet speed in the Southeast Asian country.

Speaking at the launch ceremony for CoMeet, Information and Communications Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Hung laid out two main paths for the growth of Vietnam’s remote conferencing market.

Vietnamese engineers can choose to build by themselves a platform from the ground up as what the developers of videoconferencing platform Zavi — unveiled on May 15 — had done, Hung said, or they can improve on open-source platforms, with CoMeet being an example.

CoMeet is an example of taking advantage of open-source resources, mastering the technology, and creating a product that serves the needs of domestic companies, organizations, and individuals, Hung said.

He instructed the Authority of Information Technology Application under the Ministry of Information and Communications to look at ways to grow CoMeet’s user base to prevent the platform from operating ineffectively after the launch.
