Thursday, May 20, 2021, 18:19 GMT+7

An 81-year-old Vietnamese man with COVID-19 has passed away, becoming the country’s 39th coronavirus-related death and the second reported on Thursday.

The patient, coded 3,554, has a history of cirrhosis, diabetes, hypertension, gout, and prolonged knee pain, the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

He was admitted to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi on May 3 and was diagnosed with sepsis in patients with cirrhosis and gout.

The elderly man tested positive for the novel coronavirus on May 11 and was given intensive care, breathing support, continuous dialysis, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicine, and anticoagulants.

Doctors from across the country joined a discussion on Tuesday to seek the best treatment plan for the patient, but he died on the following day after his condition quickly deteriorated.

The cause of death was identified as septic shock, sepsis, and bilateral septic arthritis of the knee caused by the novel coronavirus, cirrhosis, diabetes, and hypertension.

This is the second coronavirus-related fatality to be documented on Thursday and the fourth since the beginning of 2021.

All four deaths this year have been found during the fourth transmission wave that broke out on April 27.

Thirty-five fatalities were reported in Vietnam last year.

The nation has logged 4,764 COVID-19 cases as of Thursday afternoon, with 2,687 recoveries and 39 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

Health authorities have registered 1,722 domestic infections in 30 provinces and cities since April 27.
