Police in Vietnam's Quang Binh Province confirmed on Monday they had arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly murdering his mother-in-law after he had hidden in a local forest for seven days.
The arrest of Le Van Trien, hailing from Quang Ninh District, required the participation of more than 300 police officers and police dogs.
They spent a week searching the forest area around the irrigation lake in Vinh Ninh Commune, located in the same district.
After being brought to the police station, Trien said he ate leaves in the forest and drank spring water to survive the whole week.
The man escaped to the forest after killing Ha Thi Th., who was his mother-in-law, over a family dispute, according to his testimony.
Th.’s body was found with several injuries in her garden on July 6.
Authorities have already initiated legal proceedings against Trien after his arrest.
