Four men were caught on CCTV robbing a sanitation worker of her motorbike in Hanoi early on Tuesday morning despite the victim’s plea for mercy.
A police official in Nam Tu Liem District confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper later the same day that officers were investigating the case and hunting for the suspects.
The crime took place at around 3:25 am, when Le Thi Tram, a 39-year-old employee of Hanoi Urban Environment Company (URENCO), was driving her motorbike to collect garbage.
After reaching a section of Dai Mo Street in Nam Tu Liem District, Tram saw four men who were traveling on two motorbikes in the opposite direction.
They screamed at the woman as they passed her, before turning around and blocking her path.
One of the men threatened Tram and forced her to hand over the key of her motorcycle.
Although Tram cried and begged for their mercy, the men eventually left with her vehicle.
The victim later reported the crime to local police.
“The motorbike was old, but my husband and I had worked very hard to afford it,” Tram said during an interview with Tuoi Tre.
“It was the most valuable asset of our family.”
As Tram is still traumatized by the incident, her husband has been taking her to work and assisting her in the job.
Tram is part of a 23-member Dai Mo sanitation team, which is under the management of URENCO, said Lai Thi Minh Ly, the team leader.
Most of the sanitation workers in the team have to work at midnight or very early in the morning.
“I have told my team to be cautious while on the job. Hopefully, competent authorities will soon catch the suspects,” Ly stated.
Tram was gifted a new motorbike by the Nam Tu Liem District police unit on Wednesday morning.
