The tally of coronavirus patients in Hanoi has reached approximately 1,500 since the pandemic’s fourth wave erupted in Vietnam in late April, local health authorities reported.
With 21 new COVID-19 cases confirmed on Thursday morning, Hanoi has registered 1,488 infections since April 27, when the virus flared up again, the municipal Department of Health said.
Among the total, 893 cases were detected in quarantine facilities while the rest were found in the community.
Five cases had connections to Bac Giang Province, while another was linked to Ho Chi Minh City, which has recently become the largest COVID-19 hotspot with thousands of infections recorded every day.
Hanoi has applied social distancing measures since July 24 under the prime minister’s Directive No. 16, which includes the closure of non-essential businesses and services, a stay-home order, a ban on gatherings larger than two people, a minimum two-meter distance between people, and the suspension of public transport.
The capital city has conducted its fifth coronavirus vaccination drive since July 27 with a target of around 200,000 injections per day.
As of Thursday morning, Hanoi, whose population is over eight million, has seen the numbers of people receiving the first and second vaccine doses topping 780,500 and 258,200, respectively, according to the COVID-19 Vaccination Portal.
Nationwide, more than 7.55 million vaccine doses have been administered, with over 6.77 million people getting the first shot and nearly 779,000 others receiving two full doses.
The Ministry of Health confirmed on Thursday morning 3,943 new COVID-19 infections, including 3,941 domestic and two imported cases, of which 2,349 were detected in Ho Chi Minh City.
The latest cases have taken Vietnam’s caseload to 181,756, including 54,332 recoveries and 2,327 deaths, as logged since early 2020.
The Southeast Asian country has documented 177,855 domestic cases in this flare-up.
