Heavy rain flooded many major streets of Hanoi on Monday, causing traffic jams for commuters.
The downpour was identified as the upshot of Storm Lionrock, which hit Vietnam last weekend after traveling through the East Vietnam Sea as a tropical depression.
As witnessed by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper correspondents on Monday, floodwaters on To Huu and Luong The Vinh Streets in Nam Tu Liem District surged to the height of the cars’ wheels.
Flooding also transpired on a gathering road section to Thang Long Avenue, located near the Bao Son Paradise Park urban area in Hoai Duc District.
Floodwaters also encroached on several underpasses that cross Thang Long Avenue, which impeded the progress of crossing commuters.
The inundation also caused the engines of many vehicles to fail.
By midday on Monday, floodwaters had yet to recede in many areas, despite the efforts of the Hanoi Drainage and Sewage Company, which mobilized pumps to drain out the floods.
