Three eighth graders drowned after having a swim in a water pit in the north-central Vietnamese province of Thanh Hoa on Sunday afternoon, local authorities confirmed on Monday.
The funerals of the victims, all of whom were residents of Xuan Sinh Commune in Thanh Hoa’s Tho Xuan District and studied at Xuan Son Middle School, took place on Monday.
While hanging out together on Sunday afternoon, the three students took a swim in a water pit in the same commune to mitigate the impacts of sun heat, according to Le Huy Nhi, head of the local bureau of education and training.
Functional forces said they drowned possibly because they were incapable of swimming.
Local administration and education officials visited the victims’ houses and extended condolences to their families following their deaths.
After the accident, the education bureau in Tho Xuan District has requested schools across the locale to address the task of child drowning prevention, Nhi said.
