Vietnam registers highest daily coronavirus infection spike in over 3 weeks

The Ministry of Health announced 21,909 additional COVID-19 patients across Vietnam on Tuesday, alongside 4,397 recoveries and 97 virus-related fatalities.

The newest cases, including eight imported and 21,901 domestic transmissions, were recorded in all 63 provinces and cities, the health ministry said, elaborating that 14,982 contracted the virus in the community.

This is the sharpest daily rise of coronavirus infections since January 15, when Vietnam confirmed 16,378 cases. 

Hanoi logged 2,903 of the latest local cases, Nghe An Province 1,717, Hai Duong Province 1,245, Thanh Hoa Province 998, Hoa Binh Province 944, Bac Ninh Province 897, Vinh Phuc Province 891, Da Nang 854, Hai Phong City 830, Phu Tho Province 769, Binh Dinh Province 571, Quang Nam Province 364, Lam Dong Province 352, Quang Ninh Province 336, Ha Tinh Province 299, Thua Thien-Hue Province 252, Khanh Hoa Province 183, Quang Ngai Province 177, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province 161, Ho Chi Minh City 116, Cao Bang Province 105, Binh Thuan Province 72, Can Tho City 28, and Dong Nai Province five.

Vietnam had documented 16,809 locally-transmitted infections on Monday.

The country has detected 2,373,577 community transmissions in all its 63 provinces and cities since the fourth virus wave broke out on April 27, 2021. Over 2.1 million of them have recovered from COVID-19.

Ho Chi Minh City tops the caseload with 514,649 patients, followed by Binh Duong Province with 292,780, Hanoi with 154,101, Dong Nai Province with 99,965, Tay Ninh Province with 88,606, Ca Mau Province 56,804, Dong Thap Province with 47,520, Binh Phuoc Province 47,413, Can Tho City with 44,451, Vinh Long Province 44,343, Long An Province with 41,738, Da Nang with 39,105, An Giang Province with 35,608, Tien Giang Province with 35,378, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province with 31,336, and Binh Thuan Province with 29,597.

Vietnam confirmed only 1,570 locally-transmitted infections in total in the previous three waves.

The health ministry announced 4,397 hospital discharges on Tuesday, taking the national count to 2,126,777.

The toll has surged to 38,521, with 97 virus-linked deaths added today. 

Vietnam has reported 2,380,695 patients in total, including 192 imported and community-based Omicron infections, since the COVID-19 pandemic first hit the country in early 2020.

The Omicron cases consist of 92 in Ho Chi Minh City, 27 in Quang Nam Province, 20 in Quang Ninh Province, 14 in Hanoi, 11 in Khanh Hoa Province, eight in Da Nang, six in Hung Yen Province, four in Kien Giang Province, two in Thanh Hoa Province, two in Hai Duong Province, one in Hai Phong City, one in Long An Province, one in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, one in Binh Duong Province, one in Lam Dong Province, and one in Ninh Binh Province.

Healthcare workers have administered more than 183 million vaccine doses, including 203,969 shots on Monday, since vaccination was rolled out nationwide on March 8, 2021.

Over 79.1 million of the country’s 98 million people have received at least one dose while above 74.3 million have been jabbed twice.

The number of third doses – including additional primary shots for immunocompromised people, boosters, and third jabs of Cuba’s Abdala vaccine has reached 29,692,103.
