The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) has just announced the temporary closure of one runway at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City from 2:00 pm on February 21 to 2:00 pm on March 15 to repair and upgrade relevant components.

During this period, the airport will connect some under-construction taxiways in parallel with the 25R/07L runway under a plan previously approved by the CAAV.

The authority will reduce the number of flights to 30 per hour from February 21 to April 30 due to the closure of the runway, according to the Vietnam News Agency

Previously, the first phase of the renovation of the 25R/07L runway, three kilometers long and 46 meters wide, was completed in late 2020 after starting in June that year.

During that period, the entire runway also remained closed.

The entire project to upgrade the 25R/07L runway at Tan Son Nhat International Airport will cost a total of VND2 trillion (US$87.8 million).

Tan Son Nhat, Vietnam’s largest airport, has been overloaded for many years and the resultant damage has been evident in visible cracks and deformation as well as subsidence of the asphalt surface on its two runways and taxiways, which have been reported since 2017.

The number of passengers the airport handles each year has exceeded 36 million since 2017, well above its designed capacity of 25 million passengers per year.
