Multiple parts of the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang have been deluged as heavy unseasonal downpours triggered by a tropical depression lingered the whole Friday, forcing residents to relocate in the middle of the night.
As it started raining heavily in Da Nang early, many streets across the city were submerged 30-50 centimeters under water by midnight of the day.
Rainwater was so high that vehicles could not travel through some sections near the intersection of Nguyen Van Linh and Ham Nghi Streets in Thanh Khe District at times.
Floodwater on the Han River also began to rise late in the afternoon.
As the prolonged rains were unexpected for this time of the year, rainwater washed away a large amount of waste that blocked sewers and prevented the water from running to drainage systems in several residential areas.
As a result, rainwater did not only submerge the streets but also pour into many households.

“All households in our alley had to unclog the drains at around 10:00 pm but still failed to mitigate inundation,” said Dao Nhu Quynh, a resident down Alley No. 251 on Thai Thi Boi Street in Thanh Khe District.
Many households on Tran Xuan Le and Huynh Ngoc Hue Streets in the district, meanwhile, parked their vehicles and moved furniture to higher places to avoid flooding.
As Hoa Khanh Nam Ward in Lien Chieu District suffered the same situation, functional forces evacuated some households down Alley No. 138 on Hoang Van Thai Street to safety.

Many localities in Vietnam’s central region had moderate to heavy rains in the past 24 hours, according to the Hydro-meteorological Station for the central region.
Rainfall in many places in Quang Nam Province, adjacent to Da Nang City, reached 370 millimeters, while the central coastal city had rainfall range of 100-300 millimeters, with the record level of 319 millimeters measured in Hoa Phu Thanh area.
Due to the influence of a low pressure area weakening after combining with cold air, there will be moderate, heavy, and very heavy rains and thunderstorms in some places in the region in the next 24 hours, according to the weather forecast.
In Da Nang, the average rainfall will be reduced to 50-150 millimeters.
