The developer of an illegal 12-story hotel construction on Phu Quoc Island off southern Vietnam has been fined VND61.5 million (US$2,600) and required to dismantle the building within 10 days.

The People’s Committee of Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang Province on Monday confirmed the penalty for the developer of the hotel project on Tran Hung Dao Street in Duong To Commune.

The construction is located along one of the routes leading to the center of Phu Quoc Island.

Six floors of this hotel were built prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the remaining six stories were constructed after.

Many people were concerned about the safety of the building since the construction was halted for such a long time.

On June 21, inspectors under the provincial Department of Construction coordinated with relevant units to inspect the construction site.

A representative of the contractor said they were hired by a man residing in Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi and that there were no construction contracts signed between them.

The inspectors then ordered the cessation of the construction.

The province’s urban management office sent two letters to the project developer in Hanoi, but the post office reported that there was no recipient.

On July 27, local authorities worked with the contractor and officially booked violations against the project.

The 12-story hotel was built without approved construction planning, while its staff housing area and restaurant, which total over 2,000 square meters, were constructed on land zoned for perennial crops, authorities stated.

The Phu Quoc People’s Committee decided to impose fines worth a combined VND61.5 million ($2,600) upon the project's developer and ordered the dismantling of the hotel, along with its staff housing area and restaurant, within 10 days.

The developer was also required to return the land plot to its original condition.

Local authorities will pull down the building if the developer fails to comply with the order within the given period.
