Two students aged 15 and 16 drowned while bathing at a stream in the central Vietnamese province of Quang Ngai around noon on Monday, local authorities confirmed later the same day.
The two victims were identified as Tran Dinh D., 15, and Nguyen Duy N., 16.
According to the accounts of their two companions, the group of four went to Tra Boi stream in Tra Bong District for a swim after attending the new school year opening ceremony at their school in Son Tinh District on Monday morning.
With overconfidence in their swimming skills, D. and N. swam to a deep water area, while the two companions only bathed in shallow water.
D. and N. then suddenly drowned, prompting the two others to find people for help.
But it was too late when rescuers arrived.
Tra Boi stream has emerged as a new picnic destination in Quang Ngai recently but poses high risks due to many deep holes, according to local people.
