Storm Nesat weakened into a tropical depression while at sea on Wednesday night, though heavy rains are still forecast to batter provinces in north-central Vietnam over the next few days.
The tropical depression was located in the maritime area off the localities from north-central Quang Tri Province to central Quang Ngai Province as of 1:00 am on Thursday, the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting reported.
The wind speed averaged between 39 and 61km per hour.
The tropical depression is expected to travel northwest over the next 12 hours while further downgrading to a low-pressure area off the north-central coast.
The coast from Quang Tri Province to Quang Ngai Province, as well as the maritime areas around the Gulf of Tonkin, will see rains, thunderstorms, and gusts.
Rough seas and waves measuring four to six meters will hit the northern part of the East Vietnam Sea from Thursday.
Due to the combined effect of the tropical depression and cold front, heavy downpours will lash north-central provinces and parts of northern Vietnam throughout Thursday.
In the northern region, average lows will dip to 15-18 degrees Celsius in the Red River Delta and 13-15 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas.
In southern Vietnam, showers and occasional heavy downpours are forecast for Thursday.
