Many bus stops in Ho Chi Minh City have turned into rubbish dumps due to littering by some passengers and nearby residents.

Trash can usually be seen lying scattered on the floor and around the bus stops on Dien Bien Phu and Dinh Tien Hoang Streets in Binh Thanh District, Cach Mang Thang 8 Street in District 10, Truong Chinh Street in Tan Binh District, and Hanoi Highway in Thu Duc City.

A Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper correspondent saw several passengers leave empty bottles and paper boxes in a corner of a bus station on Dinh Tien Hoang Street the moment they just got off buses on Thursday morning.

At noon on the same day, some street vendors also put garbage bags behind this stop.

The empty space behind many bus stops was also converted into a pop-up garbage dump, with its stench and unsanitary scene turning passengers away as they opt to wait for buses at a distance.

More seriously, a vacant lot next to a bus stop on Truong Chinh Street was turned into a construction waste disposal place.

Many people cited this unhygienic scene at bus stops as one of the reasons for avoiding using public transportation means.

“Many bus stops located on major roads in the center of Ho Chi Minh City are not equipped with trash cans,” said Nguyen Anh Khoa, a bus commuter.

"If they are, the trash cans are sealed so people cannot put garbage in."

Admitting the undesirable situation, Ha Le An, deputy director of the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center, said his agency has been applying various measures to deal with the problem, including campaigns to raise people’s awareness and having district-level authorities punish litterers.

An stated that his center will coordinate with traffic inspectors to frequently check bus stops from now to the end of the year and handle violators in a stricter and more effective way.

In addition, the city authorities pledge to invest in new modern, high-quality bus stops.
