Police in Dak Nong Province, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, have apprehended three members of an illegal ring that stole dogs weighing a total of three metric tons.
The provincial Department of Public Security confirmed on Tuesday that officers had arrested Luu Van Do, 41, L.M.Q., 21, and Le Nhat Thanh, 24, on theft charges.
Do, who was identified as the leader of the group, was previously sentenced to one year and six months in jail for stealing dogs.
He finished serving his prison term in August.
Preliminary information showed that Do, Q., and Thanh had stolen dogs from residents in Dak Nong and Lam Dong Provinces from early October to December 10 and sold them to local slaughterhouses.
The canines stolen by the ring weighed a total of about three metric tons.
The ring members prepared tools such as machetes, stun guns, and chilly powder to steal the dogs and attack those who tried to stop them.
The three were arrested after they were caught red-handed transporting nine stolen dogs to their buyers.
Police also confiscated a stun gun, six rolls of duct tape, two 42-centimeter-long homemade arrows, two machetes, two motorbikes, and other related items.
Further investigation is ongoing.
