The Hanoi administration has decided to hold a series of fireworks displays at 31 venues across the Vietnamese capital city to ring in the 2023 Lunar New Year, while the central coastal city of Da Nang also has three pyrotechnic displays planned for the holiday.
The capital’s fireworks shows will last for a total of 15 minutes and are set to start at midnight on January 21, Hanoi vice-chairman Nguyen Ngoc Tuan said at a meeting on Monday.
Funding for the shows will come from private sponsors.
This will be the first time since the onset of COVID-19 in 2020 that Hanoi authorities have planned to organize fireworks shows in all of the city’s 30 districs in order to usher in the Lunar New Year, just as they had before the pandemic.
Hanoi canceled Lunar New Year fireworks and countdown events in 2022 and banned gatherings near its one-and-only fireworks display location during the 2021 Lunar New Year celebration due to the complicated developments relating to the coronavirus at those times.
Elsewhere, Da Nang will celebrate the arrival of the Lunar New Year by putting on three 15-minute fireworks shows on the Nguyen Van Troi Bridge, at a location opposite the Lien Chieu District administrative center, and at the Hoa Vang District administrative center, Ha Vy, deputy director of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports, said on Monday.
The 2023 Lunar New Year holiday will start on January 20 and last through January 26 in Vietnam, according to the prime minister’s decision.
The public holiday, also called Tet, is the biggest traditional festival for Vietnamese people.
