Work started on a project to expand the An Phu Intersection in Thu Duc City, under Ho Chi Minh City, which is considered one of the most congested sites in the metropolis, on Thursday morning.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the project was jointly held by the Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Authority of Ho Chi Minh City (TCIP) and the municipal Department of Transport.
TCIP deputy director Le Ngoc Hung said the project requires an estimated investment of over VND3.4 trillion (US$144.1 million).
It was mapped out to have three layers, comprising roads, a four-lane two-way tunnel, and two two-lane overpasses.
The project, scheduled for completion by April 30, 2025, is expected to be the biggest and most beautiful intersection in Ho Chi Minh City.
The tunnel of the project will connect the approach road of the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway with Mai Chi Tho Boulevard and will be stretched to the Mai Chi Tho-Dong Van Cong Intersection.
In addition, two overpasses will be constructed, including a Y-shaped one linking Mai Chi Tho Boulevard and Luong Dinh Cua Street with the approach road of the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, and another from the approach road of the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway to Mai Chi Tho Boulevard.
On the ground, there will be a tower together with a miniature landscape and lighting, green trees, waste water drainage and traffic light systems.
At the intersection of Mai Chi Tho Boulevard and Dong Van Cong Street, two overpasses connecting Mai Chi Tho Boulevard on the side of the Hanoi Highway with Dong Van Cong Street and vice versa will be built.
Moreover, a bridge will be built between the current two Giong Ong To bridges.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony, Ho Chi Minh City's vice chairman Bui Xuan Cuong, affirmed that the An Phu Intersection expansion project is a key traffic infrastructure project to deal with the traffic congestion at the city’s eastern gateway.
Once completed, the project will be connected with the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway and Luong Dinh Cua, Nguyen Duy Trinh and Nguyen Thi Dinh Streets, helping exploit the traffic infrastructure in the area.
In addition, travel from Ho Chi Minh City to other southeastern provinces and central localities will be favorable, thus fostering the inter-regional socioeconomic development.
Cuong said the construction site is a busy area with complicated traffic flows, so relevant agencies must cooperate closely with local traffic police officers and inspectors to ensure the progress of the project and minimize congestion.
“The An Phu Intersection will have a tower and a modern park as symbols for Ho Chi Minh City’s growth aspirations,” Cuong added.
