A three-hour traffic jam on the road leading to Cat Lai Ferry – a major link between Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province – cast a dark cloud on the otherwise sunny three-day New Year weekend.
Dong Nai’s Ly Thai To Street was jam packed with vacationers looking to get back to Ho Chi Minh City after the three-day New Year holiday weekend, with crowds beginning to pack the entrance to Cat Lai Ferry, which sits at the end of the road, at around 5:00 pm on Monday.

A line of cars awaiting stretched about two kilometers down the road, while motorcyclists coped with a significantly shorter wait to get to the ferry but had to deal with out-of-season rainfall.

On average, motorcyclists waited just 15-20 minutes to board the ferry, according to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporter’s observation.
Car drivers were not so lucky.

“I’ve been waiting here for almost three hours, and we’re nowhere near the ferry,” one car driver said.

“Crowding during holidays is hard to avoid, but it’s unacceptable that some drivers used the oncoming traffic lane to move up the line faster,” he added.

In order to shorten the waiting time, the ferry’s ticket staff walked up the line to sell tickets to drivers, but the congestion still lingered until late into the evening.
