A fire erupted at a lumber warehouse of a household in Hiep Hoa District in the northern province of Bac Giang early on Friday morning, killing one and injuring four people.

The lumber warehouse, whose owner is Vu Van C., 46, is located in Dong Dao Hamlet in Hop Thinh Commune, a leader of the commune told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

When the fire broke out, C.’s family, including C., his wife and three children, were sleeping.

After discovering the fire, firefighters and locals quickly approached the scene for rescue operations.

Despite being hospitalized, 15-year-old Vu Duc D., a son of C., suffocated to death the same day.

Other members of this family were injured and are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

The fire burned down all machines, wood and assets, including one car and two motorbikes, inside the facility at a total value of nearly VND2.5 billion (US$106,870).

The representatives of Hop Thinh Commune gave condolences and financial support of VND5 million ($213.8) to his family.

Police are investigating the cause of the fatal fire.

Statistics from the Bac Giang police department indicated in 2022, the province saw 17 fires, claiming no lives, but causing a loss of some VND1.6 billion ($68,420), down 10 cases from 2021.

In February this year, Vietnam reported 154 fires and 13 wildfires, leaving three people dead and four others injured, and destroying assets worth VND9.5 billion ($406,110), according to the Fire Prevention, Fighting and Rescue Police Department.
