A tree in the yard of a middle school in downtown Ho Chi Minh City was uprooted, injuring one student and five adults on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at Tran Van On Middle School in Da Kao Ward, District 1 at 7:00 am, when many parents were taking their children to the school.

The tree suddenly fell onto one of the school walls, crashing into some people who were doing school drop-offs.

Many parents quickly discovered the tree falling, so they stampeded away from the uprooted tree, while some failed to escape and were trapped in its branches.

The uprooted tree left six people, including one student, injured and crushed nine motorcycles, according to a quick report sent to the district by the Da Kao Ward People’s Committee.

Le Thi Thanh Giang, principal of Tran Van On Middle School, said that the injured student was admitted to Children’s Hospital 2, and the student’s health is in stable condition.

T., a parent of a student at the school, said that when taking his child to the school at nearly 7:00 am, he saw the fallen tree. Competent forces were present at the scene, he added.

A representative of Children’s Hospital 2 said that the hospital admitted a patient who is a student at Tran Van On Middle School at about 8:00 am due to injuries caused by an uprooted tree.

The student was unconscious, so doctors took a CT scan and X-ray to conclude whether the student suffered internal injuries, said the representative.

The uprooted tree is identified as a Saman tree with a stump diameter of around one meter and decaying roots.

Relevant agencies and the city’s green tree park company are working to determine the cause of the tree fall.
