A cleaner of a company in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City was arrested on Saturday for allegedly stealing assets worth VND3.5 billion (US$149,272) from the company’s director, who is from Hong Kong.

The Ho Chi Minh City criminal police joined hands with police officers in Binh Chanh District to apprehend Vo Thi Ngoc Quyen, a 47-year-old resident in District 7 and a cleaner of the company headquartered in the Him Lam Residential Area in Binh Chanh.

There was a small safe in an unlocked wooden cabinet in the director’s room, Quyen declared.

Believing that the safe contained valuable assets, Quyen hatched a plot to steal the safe after her boss said he would go on a business trip.

She later bought a hack-sawing machine and brought it to the company.

She used the hack-sawing machine to saw the bottom of the cabinet and took the safe to her residence in District 7 on Wednesday. She later returned to the company and worked normally.

Quyen purchased a new SIM card at 3:00 pm on the same day to learn about the safe on the Internet before calling a locksmith who opened the safe on Thursday.

The safe contained a Rolex watch, a Geneve watch, four golden rings, a golden necklace, four gemstones, and two yellow metal pieces from a watchband.

She later got rid of the hack-sawing machine and the SIM card prior to deleting her call and search history on her mobile phone.

Quyen sold the necklace at Hoa Binh Market in District 5 for VND30 million ($1,279) at 2:00 pm on the same day and used VND20 million ($852) to pay debts.

The company reported the theft to police on Friday.

Police officers later launched an investigation into the case and determined Quyen as the suspect.
