Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City announced on Thursday that its doctors had successfully reattached the amputated hand of a five-year-old boy from Ca Mau Province.

The patient, G.G.H., 5, is expected to be discharged from the hospital next week.

H. was admitted to Cho Ray Hospital in District 5, Ho Chi Minh City with a severed right hand after he was struck by a motorbike while crossing a street on March 27, according to his father.

H.’s family members first took him to a local medical facility in Ca Mau for first aid before transferring him to Cho Ray.

Given the patient’s critical condition, the hospital’s doctors activated the red alert protocol to perform the surgical replantation to reattach his severed hand as soon as possible.

The surgery lasted more than seven hours and involved the coordination of several different departments.

The child’s vital signs were stable following the surgery; his newly-reattached hand has become warm; and he has been able to slightly move the fingers.
