A riverside poultry farm in Tien Giang Province, southern Vietnam was hit by landslides on Tuesday morning, killing around 10,000 chickens in the farm which were pushed into a nearby river, confirmed a local official.
The incident took place at around 0:30 am at the poultry farm run by L.M.A. in Binh Ninh Commune, Cho Gao District, according to Nguyen Tan Tai, chairman of the commune’s administration.
The landslides, which affected an area measuring over 30 meters long, caused part of the poultry farm and surrounding trees to collapse into the Tien River even though A. had built an embankment to protect his farm.
Losses triggered by the landslides, which are forecast to further affect the area, were estimated at VND5 billion (US$212,600), the farm owner said.
Local inhabitants said that the affected area showed no abnormal signs prior to the landslides, so they were not prepared to cope with the issue.
Recently, illegal sand mining reportedly took place frequently in a Tien River section near this area.
Tai said that one of the reasons behind the landslides was illegal sand mining in the Tien River.
Local authorities already took measures to tackle illegal sand mining, but they lacked equipment and vehicles to completely settle the issue, he added.
Previously, landslides also moved a local household’s sandbank, 500 meters away from the affected poultry farm, and other equipment and vehicles into the Tien River, Tai said.
