The Thu Thiem 4 bridge project connecting Thu Duc City and District 7 in Ho Chi Minh City needs an estimated investment of VND5.3 trillion (US$225.7 million), VND350 billion ($14.9 million) higher than the previous estimate.
It is among the 11 key projects that the municipal Department of Transport will submit to the People’s Council for consideration and approval at a meeting in July.
The department approved a plan to choose contractors for the project in December last year.
The Thu Thiem 4 bridge was designed to have a length of over two kilometers, six lanes, and a vertical clearance of 10 meters.
The project, once completed, will help reduce the number of vehicles entering the inner-city area and traffic congestion in the south of Ho Chi Minh City while enhancing the connectivity with the Thu Thiem New Urban Area in Thu Duc City.
The bridge will stretch from Nguyen Co Thach Street in Thu Duc City to Luu Trong Lu Street in District 7 and span over the Saigon River.
At present, large vehicles must pass through National Highway 1 or Vo Chi Cong Street to reach District 7 or Nha Be District.
Once the Thu Thiem 4 bridge project is completed, the travel time between District 7 or Nha Be District and Thu Duc City will be shortened significantly.
Besides the Thu Thiem 4 bridge project, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport also sought the municipal People’s Council’s approval for projects to expand D3 Street in Go Vap District, build embankments on the right bank of a Can Giuoc River section passing through the city, and install elevators at pedestrian bridges connecting elevated stations along the city’s first metro line.
These projects carry a respective price tag of VND315 billion ($13.4 million), VND274 billion ($11.7 million), and over VND60 billion ($2.6 million).
