The administration of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam on Saturday held the ground-breaking ceremony of a project to expand and upgrade the 77-kilometer-long coastal road 994, which carries a price tag of over VND6.5 trillion (US$276.3 million).

Road 994, developed in 2005, stretches from Vung Tau City to Xuyen Moc District and has become overloaded.

After the upgrade, the road will start at industrial parks and seaports in Phu My Town and end at high-end resorts and coastal urban areas in Ho Tram, a popular tourism strip in Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

The road will have a width of 42 meters and include two bridges spanning the Cua Lap and Song Ray Rivers once the project is completed.

Coastal road 994 will then become an arterial route of Ba Ria-Vung Tau as it will pass through five out of the seven mainland cities and districts of the province, including Phu My, Vung Tau, Long Dien, Dat Do, and Xuyen Moc.

It will connect the Cai Mep-Thi Vai port cluster, the Long Son Industrial Park, and the Long Son Petrochemicals Complex with sea tourism areas in the east of the province and pass through the most beautiful coastal tourist sites and urban areas, such as Long Hai, Phuoc Hai, Ho Tram, and Binh Chau, creating a driving force for the province’s tourism and service development.

Road 994, together with other important traffic projects, such as Bien Hoa-Vung Tau Expressway and Phuoc An Bridge, which were commenced on Sunday, will create a modern traffic network connecting areas in the province and the province itself with the southern key economic region, said Nguyen Cong Vinh, vice-chairman of the People’s Committee of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
