The Soc Trang Hospital for Women and Children in the Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang rescued an eight-year-old boy who suffered more than 60 wasp stings, a doctor at the hospital said on Tuesday.
Dr. Chung Tan Dinh, director at the hospital, said that the boy was hospitalized in critical condition with over 60 wasp stings on his body, swollen lips, and shortness of breath.
Some 20 bee stings are enough to cause death, Dr. Dinh said, noting that the boy was saved promptly.
He underwent the critical phase over a month after receiving treatment.
His lips turned pink, while his hands and legs became warm again, the doctor said.
The patient’s heart and lungs are functioning normally, Dr. Dinh added.
The patient was identified as S.L.B.D., who lives in Thuan Hung Commune in My Tu District under Soc Trang Province, southern Vietnam.
His family said that D. was attacked by wasps as he unintentionally trampled on a wasp nest while he and his parents were visiting their paddy field.
Honey bees, carpenter bees, and wasps are dangerous to people as their venom can give rise to allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, multi-organ failure, and death, news site VnExpress reported.
