Police in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam on Wednesday detained a 52-year-old man for allegedly murdering his wife and three daughters with carbon monoxide (CO), a poisonous gas, while they were sleeping in the early hours of the same day.
Ho Xuan Hai, residing in Cam An Nam Commune, Cam Lam District, admitted to using CO to poison his family members, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Van Sang, spokesperson of the provincial police, said on Thursday.
Hai claimed that he invested heavily in a pig farm but faced failure and was unable to pay debts. As a result, he drew up a plan to poison his family members.
He later bought a CO gas cylinder online and learned how to use it.
While his wife and children were sleeping, Hai let the poisonous gas spread to their bedroom.
He later entered the room and inhaled the gas but remained alive.
On Wednesday morning, residents in their neighborhood detected the bodies of the wife, 49, and three children, aged 21, 14, and 10.
Hai was barely breathing and rushed to the Cam Ranh General Hospital. He overcame the critical condition after doctors provided him with intensive care.
The local police blocked the scene of the case, worked with relevant people, and confiscated the CO gas cylinder along with a plastic pipe connected to the gas cylinder.
