The Hanoi People’s Committee on Wednesday morning held a ceremony to inaugurate the second phase of the Vinh Tuy Bridge, which spans the Red River.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the inauguration ceremony of the second-phase bridge, which measures 3.5 kilometers in length and over 19 meters in width.

Duong Duc Tuan, vice-chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, said the second-phase bridge is an important traffic infrastructure project which will help ease pressure on the existing first-phase Vinh Tuy Bridge, enhance the connectivity between two banks of the Red River, and meet the increasing transportation demands between the capital’s downtown area and its northern and northeastern regions.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, PM Chinh lauded the efforts of the Hanoi authorities and relevant agencies to complete the second phase of the Vinh Tuy Bridge four months earlier than scheduled and incur no cost overrun.

“Amid the difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic, such achievements should be praised,” the government leader noted.

He added that the inauguration of the second-phase Vinh Tuy Bridge is an important basis for Hanoi to kick-start the Hong Ha and Me So bridge projects next year.

He also required Hanoi to pay more attention to the design of new bridges to make sure that each bridge in the Vietnamese capital is a tourism product and features typical characteristics of the city, besides ensuring their progress and quality.

Construction of the second phase of the Vinh Tuy 2 Bridge began in January 2021 and was expected to last three years.

The four-lane bridge carries a price tag of over VND2.5 trillion (US$103.1 million). It runs parallel with the phase-one Vinh Tuy Bridge and stretches from the intersection of Tran Quang Khai, Nguyen Khoai, and Minh Khai Streets in Hai Ba Trung District to the intersection of Long Bien and Thach Ban Streets in Long Bien District.

The Hanoi Department of Transport indicated that the second-phase Vinh Tuy Bridge is a one-way bridge allowing vehicles and commuters to travel from Hai Ba Trung to Long Bien.

Following the completion of the second phase, the entire Vinh Tuy Bridge became the widest bridge in Hanoi with eight lanes for traffic.
