Police in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang are investigating a case where an 83-year-old woman died of heart failure and pulmonary edema and her 55-year-old son was hospitalized after both of them drank the same powdered milk.

At 6:00 am on Saturday, Pham Thi P., 83, residing in Hoa Hung Commune, Cai Be District, Tien Giang Province, found her 45-year-old son Pham Van Y. dead.

The family thought he died of a disease, so they did not report his death to the local authorities.

At 10:00 pm on the same day, P. drank 100ml of powdered milk prepared by her daughter. P. immediately suffered a tightness across her chest and shortness of breath, vomited and died five minutes later.

The family also thought that P. died of a disease, so they did not inform the local administration of her death.

At 4:00 am on Sunday, Pham Minh T., 55, another son of P., made 150ml of the powdered milk while attending P.’s funeral but developed symptoms of headache, dizziness, and vomiting after drinking only 50ml of the powdered milk.

His family rushed him to Trieu An-Loan Tram Hospital in neighboring Vinh Long Province.

Doctors there diagnosed T. with milk poisoning and transferred him to Vinh Long General Hospital for further treatment.

Police in Cai Be District have coordinated with relevant agencies to examine the scene and question related people.

The preliminary investigation results revealed that both P. and Y. died of heart failure and pulmonary edema.
