The education authority of Da Nang City, central Vietnam asked all K-12 students to stay home on Monday as heavy rainfall is expected to further lash the coastal city.

The school closure announcement was made late on Sunday afternoon when schools citywide completed flood clean-up.

Moderate to heavy rains will likely cause flooding in many parts citywide throughout Monday, the municipal Department of Education and Training said, citing the national weather center’s forecast.

The city will announce school reopenings when the weather improves.

Meanwhile, private universities were told to follow up on weather conditions to properly arrange classes for their students, the department said.

Earlier, the municipal authority ordered school closures on Friday and Saturday last week due to the adverse weather conditions.

On Sunday afternoon, schools citywide finished clean-up operations after flooding.

Nguyen Thanh Lich, head of the education and training sub-department in Lien Chieu District where multiple locations were hit hard by flooding, said the recent floods caused no damages to local schools as the district took precautionary measures effectively.

At two schools suffering heavy flooding with the schoolyards covered in mud, teachers there jointly cleaned up the schools when the floodwaters receded, Lich elaborated.

The sub-department also asked homeroom teachers to make a list of flood-impacted students to offer them timely support, he said.

Le Anh Dao, head of Hong Quang Elementary School in Lien Chieu, said the school was among educational facilities hardest hit by floods in October last year.

This year, the school has made a swift response to heavy rainfall and flooding and thereby suffered no damages, Dao said.

In Hoa Vang District, three schools were inundated by floodwaters but the damages were minor, according to Le Van Hoang, head of the education and training sub-department in Hoa Vang.
