The People’s Committee of Phu Quoc City, a popular tourist site in Kien Giang Province, located in Vietnam's Mekong Delta region, has had kittens because of the island’s ineffective ocean plastic trash collection and treatment.
The Phu Quoc administration is calling on residents and enterprises to join hands to protect the environment and make the island city green, clean, and beautiful, contributing to boosting tourism.
The local People’s Committee on Thursday organized a conference to review the result of the ‘Day for Environment in Phu Quoc’ campaign and the performance of the World Wide Fund for Nature Vietnam (WWF – Vietnam) on ocean plastic reduction.
Speaking at the conference, Vu Cong Khanh, a representative of CEO Group Phu Quoc Company, said that the environment-driven program is launched once a month in a bid to collect garbage.

Waste in Phu Quoc City is mainly discharged from residential areas and markets, Khanh said, adding that the city should focus on dealing with trash in these hotspots.
According to the Phu Quoc People’s Committee, the city daily collects 170-180 metric tons of rubbish.
Some investors have participated in household waste treatment at the Dong Cay Sao makeshift landfill.
Doan Van Tien, vice-chairman of the Phu Quoc administration, said that ocean plastic collection and treatment remain a big headache in the island city.
“The city is stepping up efforts to set up many clean-up teams and launch a series of environmental protection campaigns to collect and treat waste in residential areas, on roads, and along beaches efficiently," Tien said.
The Phu Quoc administration also assigned the city’s division of natural resources and environment to team up with WWF – Vietnam to initiate a project aimed at protecting the environment on the island in general and in Tho Chau Island Commune in particular.
Meanwhile, relevant agencies in the city were told to put trash bins in some areas to form a habit of discarding garbage at the right places.
Between August 5 and September 30, the city saw several teams of residents and volunteers collect plastic waste along beaches and at ports in Duong To, Ganh Dau, and Ham Ninh Communes, as well as Duong Dong Ward.
