Phong Binh Commune, a flood hotspot in Phong Dien District, Thua Thien-Hue Province in central Vietnam, remains flooded whereas floodwaters have receded in many other parts in the province since Thursday.
Floodwaters in Phong Binh are expected to recede over the next five to seven days.
Seeing the beautiful and sunny weather instead of torrential rains as forecast, Ngo Quy Hong Quang, a 60-year-old resident in Ru Hop Village, Phong Binh Commune, was happy as the floodwaters might stop rising.
After two days of heavy rains, Quang’s house is 50 centimeters under water. His family’s furniture and assets were put in higher places.
The flood has turned his family’s life upside down although it has caused no property loss. Adults have been off work, while children have stopped going to school.
Tens of other households in the neighborhood faced the same fate.

Tran Van Huy, chairman of the People’s Committee of Phong Binh Commune, reported that 850 out of the 1,900 houses in the commune were submerged by floodwaters as high as 0.3-0.9 meters.
Roads and rice fields in the commune are also under water. They can be recognized from above through power poles and bamboo hedges.
Phong Binh is a flood hotspot of Phong Dien District and the floodwaters there have receded slowly, Huy added.
The commune has evacuated 35 old people of 20 households to safer places and transported two pregnant women to hospital over the past few days.
It also prepared 10 metric tons of rice and 2,000 boxes of instant noodles in response to a possible long-lasting flooding season, the official informed.
