A taxi driver has been suspended for one month after he was filmed vehemently responding to a foreigner’s admonishing him for littering in public places in Ho Chi Minh City this week.
A short video showing the situation went viral on social media on Tuesday.
In the video, a man wearing a uniform like that of taxi operator Vinasun threw a plastic bottle and a styrofoam box on the ground at a local park.
Right after that, a foreigner approached him and asked the cabby to put his trash in a public trash can.
However, the driver reacted angrily to the rebuke. He also returned to his car to get something and then came back to the foreigner in an act of defiance.
Most viewers criticized the taxi driver’s rude behavior.
“If he had got the foreigner’s advice, and recollected his trash, everything would have been okay. We should not respond impolitely, while we are wrong,” a Facebook user, named Thuy Nguyen, commented.
Ta Long Hy, director of Vinasun, confirmed the video to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on the same day, saying that the strife occurred in downtown Ho Chi Minh City on Monday.
Vinasun was in the process of identifying the location, he said.
After the case, the driver, who is a Vinasun collaborator, was asked to meet the taxi firm's leaders.
His act went against the company’s driving rules while his behavior toward an international tourist was impolite, after he broke regulations on environmental protection, said Hy.
Hy added that the driver was suspended for at least one month, from November 22 to December 20.
The cabby was also committed to bettering his behavior.
Following the situation, Vinasun vowed to raise all of its drivers’ awareness of environmental protection and emphasize polite behavior toward passengers, among others.
The Vinasun representative pledged to improve the quality of its service and expected sympathy for its driver’s bad behavior.
