Hai Chau District in Da Nang City, central Vietnam has installed convex mirrors in alleyways in a bid to minimize traffic accidents and ensure safety for local residents, district chairman Le Tu Gia Thanh said on Tuesday.

This is the first time convex mirrors have been installed in the inner-city area.

Typically, they are mainly placed on mountain passes and curved roads in order to help drivers see around turns.

As an inner-city district, Hai Chau has a high population density and many narrow alleys and roads with busy traffic, Thanh noted.

Traffic accidents often occur in such alleys. Therefore, the district has come up with many solutions to reduce such crashes, including the installation of convex mirrors.

The district’s urban management division has coordinated with the administration of wards to survey and propose 155 locations for the convex mirrors.

In the next one month, the district will erect more than 230 convex mirrors in locations with sharp bends and dangerous intersections in order to help residents see around corners and avoid collisions, Thanh informed.

The district will install the convex mirrors in areas at high risk of traffic collisions and then assess the effectiveness of the project before approving its expansion to 13 wards, the official added.

Nguyen Bao An, a resident in an alley near Da Nang International Airport, said he was living in an old residential area with most of the roads measuring only five meters in width each.

Many roads have sharp bends with limited visibility.

“Narrow roads and poor visibility pose a high risk of traffic accidents, especially at night," An said.

“We strongly support the [authorities’] decision to install convex mirrors to ensure safety for road users."
