A new cold front is expected to cause low temperatures, scattered showers, and potential thunderstorms to the northern part of Vietnam starting Wednesday, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
The cold air mass started advancing toward the northern region on Tuesday morning, the center reported.
By Wednesday morning, the northeastern area will be the first zone to feel its impact, including strengthening inland and coastal northeast winds, followed by the northwest and north-central regions.
Then, both the northern and north-central regions are expected to see temperatures drop to common ranges of 15-18 degrees Celsius.
In the northern mountainous region, temperatures may be lower, at 12-14 degrees Celsius, and in some high mountainous areas, they may fall below eight degrees Celsius.
Starting the same morning, scattered showers and thunderstorms can be observed in the northern and north-central regions, before moving from Quang Binh Province to Binh Dinh Province between Wednesday and Thursday.
Thunderstorms during this period may bring the possibility of gust, lightning, hail, and strong winds.
From Wednesday morning, the Gulf of Tonkin will experience a gradual increase in northeast winds, resulting in waves reaching heights of 1.5-2.5 meters and rough sea conditions.
In the northern region of the East Vietnam Sea, including Vietnam's Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago, northeast winds will intensify, leading to waves of two to four meters high and rough seas.
From Wednesday evening onward, the sea area from Binh Dinh Province to Ca Mau Province, the central and south-west regions of the East Vietnam Sea, including the sea to the west of Vietnam's Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, will witness stronger northeast winds, high waves ranging from two to three meters, and rough seas.
During the remainder of this month, the impact of cold air is expected to be less intense, and the northern region may experience fewer instances of extreme cold and harmful cold days compared to the average levels observed in previous years.
The hydro-meteorological agency warns of potential impacts of strong winds and large waves on maritime and fishing activities.
Frost and freezing conditions may occur in some northern mountainous areas, significantly impacting agricultural and livestock production.
In the central region, thunderstorms are likely, accompanied by moderate to heavy rain, gust, and lightning.
Meanwhile, the Central Highlands and southern regions will enter the dry season with minimal signs of unseasonal rains, prompting the need to use water resources efficiently and effectively.
