The Agency for the Development of France (AFD) will supply loans and non-refundable aid worth a combined US$40.6 million to Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam to help the province execute an erosion fighting project along Hoi An Beach.

The beach protection and anti-erosion project is estimated to cost 42 million euros (US$46 million), comprising 35 million euros ($38.4 million) in AFD loans, two million euros ($2.2 million) in non-refundable aid, and five million euros ($5.4 million) in counterpart capital from the provincial budget. 

The project is scheduled to commence in 2024 and finish in 2025.

Vo Van Diem, head of the provincial management board for agricultural project and rural development investment and construction, said on Tuesday that the board is conducting all relevant procedures to start work on the project.

Diem told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the Vietnamese prime minister approved AFD loans and aid for the project in late 2023.

The provincial People’s Committee was assigned to implement the project as scheduled and provide sufficient counterpart funds for it.

The board was appointed as the investor of the project, which encompasses such components as a 2,090-meter breakwater, a 1,490-meter-long groyne to reduce coastal erosion, beach renovation, and some supporting structures, said Diem.

Hoi An, a popular tourist attraction in Quang Nam, has faced severe coastal erosion over the past many years.

The destruction has taken a heavy toll on tourism and enterprises.

Marine abrasion and high waves have eaten away several seaside hotels and resorts in Hoi An.
