A snake farm in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region was crowded over the week-long Tet (Lunar New Year) break, which ended on Wednesday, welcoming up to 5,000 guests including foreigners every day, the management reported.
Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reporters observed a continuous influx of visitors at Dong Tam Snake Farm in Chau Thanh District, Tien Giang Province on Thursday.
Covering an area of 12 hectares, the farm is the biggest snake-raising facility in the Mekong Delta region and one of the largest of its kind in Vietnam.
Excited among the guests was 33-year-old Nguyen Thi Quyen, who, along with her husband, brought their two children from My Tho City in the province to visit the farm as part of their Tet celebrations.
"As our family has explored various typical tourist destinations, we decided to bring our children to the farm today to provide them with an opportunity to learn more about snakes, specifically, and other animals being raised here in general. It's like an ecotourism experience," Quyen explained.
Dam Huy Hoang, the farm's director, said that children made up 30 percent of the total number of visitors, both domestic and international, which is estimated at 4,000-5,000 arrivals per day during the Tet break.
Currently, more than 1,000 snakes of some 40 species are raised and preserved at the farm, the director said, adding nearly 700 among the animals are cobras.
Contrary to its common name, Hoang emphasized that the farm is not solely dedicated to snakes; it also houses various other rare and precious animals, including tigers, bears, crocodiles, pythons, and kangaroos.
In addition to a zoo for snakes and other animals, the farm has a snake museum and an ecotourism park to serve local and foreign visitors.
Notably, the farm operates a snakebite treatment facility, which is the largest of this kind in the Mekong Delta region, the director told Tuoi Tre.
The official name of the farm is Center for Cultivation, Research, and Processing of Medicinal Materials, under the Logistics Department of the Military Region 9, Hoang said.
