A sugarcane juice stall located outside the Tran Temple, a popular tourist destination in Thai Binh Province, northern Vietnam, has been temporarily suspended, pending local authorities’ investigation into allegations that the stall owner resold leftover drinks to unsuspecting travelers.

Senior Lieutenant Bui Trung Thanh, chief of the Tien Duc Commune police in Hung Ha District of the province, confirmed on Friday afternoon to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that officers have instructed the stall to halt its operations.

This suspension is in place for local forces to verify the allegations regarding the resale of leftover drinks by the stall owner.

Police officers have temporarily confiscated all the equipment and facilities associated with this stall while awaiting the results of the verification process, Thanh said.

Earlier on the same day, a video clip circulating on social media depicted a woman purportedly combining leftover sugarcane juice drinks from previous customers with fresh ones, raising concerns about the hygiene and safety practices at her stall.

The video footage revealed the drink seller washing used straws and subsequently reusing them for new guests, giving rise to worries about hygiene practices at the stall.

The video clip quickly sparked anger among netizens, given that these unhygienic practices occurred while many travelers were enjoying their visits to spiritual tourism sites, including the Tran Temple in the province.

The temple is renowned for housing the tombs of the first three emperors of the Tran Dynasty (1225-1400) in Vietnam.

"If indeed such an incident occurred, we will address it with utmost seriousness to make it a deterrent to other drink sellers, aiming to prevent such happenings in the future," stated Thanh.

Since the commencement of the 2024 Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday on February 8, approximately 200 food and drink stalls have been in operation in the area, according to the official.

In response to the incident, the commune's administration has issued a reminder to all other food and drink caterers, urging strict adherence to food hygiene and safety regulations

Local authorities are encouraging the public to promptly report any similar cases to competent agencies.

The temple serves as the venue for the 'Tran Temple Festival,' a captivating event scheduled to take place for six days, from February 22 to 27.

This annual traditional activity is dedicated to commemorating the merits of the emperors of the Tran Dynasty.
