The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) on Wednesday required local airlines to report their air ticket sale during the 2024 Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet, by Monday next week at the latest following complaints about difficulties in buying air tickets and high air fares during the holiday.
In particular, the CAAV sent its requirement to Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Bamboo Airways, Pacific Airlines, and Vietravel Airlines.
They tasked the airlines with reporting their supervision of air ticket agents and the procedures they currently have in place to deal with violations.
Previously, many passengers had complained that they had found it hard to book air tickets for flights from Hanoi, central Quang Nam and Thua Thien-Hue Provinces to Ho Chi Minh City, even after the 10th day of this lunar year, or Monday this week.
Even routes with the most daily flights, including Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City, for which several carriers offered 20-25 flights, sold out extremely quickly.
Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper found that Vietnam Airlines’ economy-class tickets for Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City flights on Wednesday and Thursday were sold out.
Only business-class tickets with prices hitting VND7.2-9.8 million (US$295-402) remained.
Tickets for flights from Quang Nam, Thua Thien-Hue, and Binh Dinh Provinces to Ho Chi Minh City were also either sold out or only being offered at exorbitant prices.
According to the CAAV, Vietnamese airlines transported over 1.5 million customers and nearly 8,560 metric tons of cargo between February 8 and 14, or the 29th day of the last month of last lunar year and the fifth day of this lunar year, up 11 and 7.3 percent, respectively.
