Border guards in Ca Mau Province, southern Vietnam have apprehended eight men for allegedly using homemade guns, crossbows, stones, and other items to attack several fishing boats operating at sea, leaving one fisherman injured, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The attack happened during a dispute over fishing grounds between a watercraft equipped with a powerful engine and other fishing vessels in the waters off Ca Mau at midday on Wednesday, according to the Khanh Tien border guard agency in U Minh District.

Seven people aboard the watercraft, steered by Nguyen Hai Dang, shot lead bullets and iron balls using the homemade guns and crossbows, as well as threw stones and snail shells at the other fishing boats registered in neighboring Kien Giang Province.

Consequently, one fisherman on a fishing boat from Kien Giang was wounded by a gunshot to the arm.

Border guards were immediately called to the scene of the dispute.

While the border guards were hunting for the attackers, Nguyen Quoc Nghi, aged 31, Duong Nhat Hao, aged 22, and Truong Hoai Linh, aged 27 threw the guns and crossbows into the sea to destroy evidence.

Around 30 minutes laters, border guards managed to capture the eight suspects along with possible items linked to the attack, such as crossbows, lead bullets, iron balls.

These suspects, who said they were residents of Ca Mau’s Tran Van Thoi District, were required to undergo a drug test, with Nguyen Manh Gioi, aged 18, getting a positive result.

They were then transferred to the police unit in Tran Van Thoi for further investigation.
