The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday that it was keeping a close watch on a case in which seven migrants, believed to be Vietnamese, were found in the back of a lorry at a port in the United Kingdom (UK), and was willing to take necessary citizen protection measures if the migrants are confirmed Vietnamese.
The British police on February 16 detected and saved seven migrants at Newhaven Port in Lewes District of East Sussex County, London-based newspaper The Standard reported.
The seven people are under medical care, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Vietnamese Embassy in the UK has been maintaining close communication with local authorities to monitor and stay informed about the case.
On Monday last week, Anas Al Mustafa, 42, a suspect in the case, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court.
He is being kept in custody and will appear at Lewes Crown Court on March 18.
In 2019, 39 people, including eight women and 31 men, were found dead in the refrigerated container of a semi-trailer truck at an industrial park in Essex, about 32 kilometers from central London.
They were all later confirmed as Vietnamese.
