With significant upgrades underway at the Tho Quang fishing port and anchorage area in Son Tra District, Da Nang City is on track to become one of Vietnam’s largest fishing centers.
The upgrade project, aimed at connecting to the East Vietnam Sea and Vietnam's Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago fishing grounds, began in early 2024 under the supervision of the city's Agricultural and Rural Development Construction Investment Project Management Board.
It is expected to be completed within four years. Phase one, with an investment of VND217.5 billion (US$8.72 million), involved building a 150-meter-long, 9.5-meter-wide pier with a full canopy, enabling multiple vessels to dock simultaneously for unloading and resupply.

Pier 2 was extended by over 80 meters, with a canopy added, and an 8,000-square-meter concrete yard was constructed for seafood processing and transportation.
The project has now entered phase two with a VND250 billion ($10 million) budget, which involves dredging the seabed and connecting piers 1 and 3 to pier 2 and a newly constructed pier to further increase the port’s capacity.
Other upgrades include improvements to the Tho Quang wholesale seafood market, the construction of a wastewater treatment plant with a capacity of 400 cubic meters per day, and enhancements to internal roads and drainage systems.

Once completed, the project will significantly increase the port's capacity and efficiency, meeting higher fishing port standards, supporting fishing logistic services, and serving as a regional storm shelter.
The upgraded port is anticipated to accommodate up to 300 vessels per day, each with a maximum capacity of 2,000 horsepower, and handle 100,000 metric tons of goods annually.
In August, Da Nang's seafood production surpassed 3,500 metric tons, reflecting a 17.7-percent spike from the previous month and a 14.6-percent year-on-year rise, according to the city’s statistics office.
As per the national fishing port system plan for 2021-30, with a vision extending to 2050, Tho Quang is set to become one of five key fishing centers in Vietnam, besides other major hubs in Hai Phong City, Khanh Hoa Province, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, and Kien Giang Province.

In addition, the Tho Quang market is being renovated into a three-story facility to support business operations, making it one of 11 markets selected to be a tourism hub by 2030.
For years, the area surrounding the Tho Quang Port has faced environmental challenges.
In response, Da Nang has made significant investments to address pollution, approving a VND65 billion ($2.61 million) project to upgrade its drainage and wastewater collection systems.
The project, set for completion between 2024 and 2026, redirects wastewater to the Son Tra treatment plant to reduce pollution in the anchorage area and improve the quality of life for its residents.
