Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has given the green light to a plan to widen and upgrade Ca Mau Airport in Ca Mau Province, southern Vietnam at a total cost of some VND2.4 trillion (US$95.3 million).
The Airports Corporation of Vietnam will finance the project and implement it in 18 months.
After being expanded, the airport can accommodate larger aircraft like Airbus A320s and the equivalents, as well as help spur the socio-economic and cultural development of the southernmost province and other neighboring localities.
The project is set to involve building a runway with a length of 2,400 meters and a width of 45 meters, some taxiways, two aprons, and other supporting components.
Once the project is complete, the airport’s capacity will increase from 200,000 to 500,000 passengers per year.
The prime minister has directed the provincial People’s Committee to swiftly transfer the cleared land to the investor so work can begin on the airport's upgrade and expansion.
The committee is also responsible for overseeing and supervising the project.
Currently, the airport has a two-story passenger terminal designed to handle 200,000 passengers annually, along with a 1.5-kilometer-long, 30-meter-wide runway, which can only accommodate small aircraft like the ATR72.
