Traffic police in Phu Yen Province, south-central Vietnam said on Tuesday that they have fined a 39-year-old truck driver from Dong Hoa Town VND7 million (US$283) and revoked his driver’s license for three months for failing to yield to an ambulance that was responding to an emergency.
The administrative sanctions were imposed on Nguyen To Ni, 39, residing in Hoa Vinh Ward of Dong Hoa Town.
He was found failing to give way to an emergency vehicle on duty.
Last Sunday afternoon, Ni was driving a truck on National Highway 25 through Phu Hoa District in Phu Yen Province.
Despite an ambulance behind him repeatedly sounding its priority siren, Ni intentionally refused to yield.
The ambulance, belonging to Phu Hoa District Medical Center, was transporting a patient at the time.
In addition to being fined VND7 million for his offense, Ni also had his driver’s license suspended for three months.
A video of the incident circulated on social media platforms, drawing widespread criticism of the driver’s callous behavior.
