Upon release following the completion of his sentence for property theft, a Chinese citizen has been taken into custody in northern Vietnam for another case involving the same crime.
On Friday morning, police from Phu Yen Province, south-central Vietnam, temporarily arrested Huang LinZhong, 48, hailing from Hunan Province in China, to facilitate the trial of his second case.
The defendant’s arrest took place at Vinh Quang Prison in Vinh Phuc Province, northern Vietnam, on the same day he was scheduled to be released after serving his nine-month prison sentence for committing “property theft” in Thua Thien-Hue Province, located in the central region.
According to the indictment by the People’s Procuracy of Phu Yen Province, Huang entered Vietnam through Huu Nghi international border gate in Lang Son Province in the northern area on May 17, 2023.
On June 4, 2023, he arrived in Phu Yen Province and visited a jewelry store in Tuy Hoa City.
While sales staff was distracted, he secretly pocketed a gold necklace weighing 5.5535 taels, worth nearly VND44 million (US$1,784).
Afterward, Huang went north and sold the stolen necklace to a gold shop for VND16 million ($650).
On June 7, 2023, he was apprehended for committing another jewelry theft in Hue City, Thua Thien-Hue Province, for which he received a nine-month prison sentence.
Records show that in 2016, Huang was sentenced to one year and one month in prison by the People’s Court of Yuanjiang County in Yunnan Province, China, also for “property theft.”
