The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has ordered enforcement units to crack down on reckless delivery drivers who occupy sidewalks and commit traffic violations while transporting goods.
It is common to see delivery workers riding motorcycles in the city, but they often overload their vehicles, speed, and encroach on sidewalks.
In addition, many delivery workers are often spotted using their phones while driving, posing a high risk of traffic crashes.
These bad driving habits affect other road users, reduce traffic safety, and worry residents, according to the municipal department.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport proposed that the municipal Department of Industry and Trade put forward some measures to handle these driving behaviors and sanction related organizations and individuals.
The transport department also urged the Department of Public Security to conduct regular patrols and penalize delivery firms and their workers for their traffic violations.
The transport department hinted at adopting technology and images via surveillance cameras to detect and fine traffic violators for parking illegally and occupying sidewalks.
The People’s Committees of Thu Duc City and other districts in the southern metropolis were also told to participate in the enforcement process.
Many city residents have complained that delivery workers tend to speed, take calls while driving, drive the wrong way, and encroach on sidewalks, causing enormous stress and danger to road users.
