A male long-tailed monkey has been anesthetized and brought to a wildlife rescue station after it continuously annoyed residents in Ho Chi Minh City’s outskirt district of Cu Chi, the municipal Forest Protection Department announced on Saturday.

The department confirmed that it had coordinated with the local authorities to catch the monkey in Tan Phu Trung Commune, Cu Chi District.

The monkey whose origin was unknown rampaged a residential area in the commune over the past week, Nguyen Quang Hoang, deputy head of the Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station, said, citing local residents.

It damaged crops, foraged food in kitchens, made a mess in places it came, ate eggs, and caught chicks.

As a result, local residents reported the monkey to the local authorities.

Officials in Tan Phu Trung Commune and rangers from the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department then found the animal in an abandoned house, anesthetized it, and sent it to the Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station.

The long-tailed macaque weighs some 8.5 kilograms. Its scientific name is Macaca Fascicularis, which is among the wild animals of Group IIB in the list of rare and endangered forest species as per Vietnamese law.
