Intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms swept across many parts of Tuy Hoa City, the capital of Phu Yen Province in south-central Vietnam, on Tuesday evening, forcing a number of residents to manually clear clogged manholes in front of their houses to cope with heavy flooding.

Many sections of Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Tran Phu Street, and Le Thanh Phuong Street were submerged in water after rain began coming down on the city at around 7:00 pm.

Inundation on Le Thanh Phuong Street showed no signs of abating as of 9:00 pm on the same day, as manholes there were fully clogged with garbage.

Also, this low-lying street is prone to the accumulation of garbage carried by rainwater from neighboring areas.

Affected homeowners had to lift household items onto blocks, while some used wood sheets and sandbags to block rainwater from entering their houses.

Several others manually removed trash from clogged manholes to help rainwater drain quickly.

According to Le Thi Hoa, a 52-year-old resident of Le Thanh Phuong Street, the area becomes inundated after heavy rainfall due to manholes being completely clogged with garbage.

Nguyen Cong Thanh, vice-chairman of the Tuy Hoa administration, said that the provincial capital city last year launched a project to cope with flooding and improve the drainage system on this street.

However, the street experienced inundation on Tuesday night due to the extremely intense rainfall and a number of local inhabitants covering some manholes to prevent their foul smell.
