The transport authority in Kien Giang Province, southern Vietnam has banned cars of all kinds from entering a road in the buffer zone of U Minh Thuong District, which has been battered by unusually severe land subsidence, the district’s administration announced on Thursday afternoon.

The traffic ban was imposed on Road 965 to ensure human and traffic safety, and will be in effect from Tuesday until further notice.

Local residents have been asked to take the district’s main road and Road 965C to transport farm produce and other commodities using rudimentary vehicles to approach National Highway 63.

Residents can also choose Road 965B to carry goods to the district’s coastal route.

According to the U Minh Thuong District administration, land subsidence has hit more than 445 sections of road in An Minh Bac Commune and Minh Thuan Commune, affecting a combined 11 kilometers of roadway and damaging 42 homes.

To mitigate the destruction, authorities have cordoned off locations struck by land subsidence, set up 39 temporary routes, and installed 134 street lights.
